The Middletown City School District will be experiencing a few changes soon. Not too long ago the school district decided that they would be removing sixth graders from elementary schools and adding them to the junior high population. Now, they have decided to put all sixth graders into just one school, separate from all the other grades.
The sixth graders will now attend school where the Highview Elementary school is located. This means that all the children that had been planning on attending Highview will be relocated to a different elementary school in Middletown.
Highview Elementary was chosen for a number of reasons including its location. It was also chosen because the school is more than just a one-story building which allows them to organize the students into teams, much like they do in the middle schools.
And that’s not the only big change that’s happening; they also plan on tearing down Verity Middle School completely. Vail Middle School will now house more than 900 students. The idea of changing the name of Vail has been brought up. They hope to eliminate any rivalry that may exist between the Vail and Verity students. The school district wants to try to make this transition as smooth as possible for faculty, students and parents.
All of this is part of a plan to reduce the city’s spending without having to remove certain programs from the schools such as academic clubs, music, drama and athletics. The downfall, however, is that the city will also be eliminating a few jobs while making the dramatic cuts. However, the changes have to be made because the district will be facing a potential twenty percent cut in state funding next year. Putting sixth graders into a separate school and combining the two middle schools will save the city about five million dollars.
While the changes are somewhat dramatic, when it comes down to it, the district is just trying to make the best of the situation they have. They are attempting to keep their schools as much the same as possible, but in order to save some parts of the school system, they will have to sacrifice others.
